Author Biography

B.N. van Hulzen, Leipzig University

B. N. van Hulzen recently received his PhD in philosophy from Leipzig University for his dissertation, Solidarity Between Sacred and Profane (2024). His research centers on the work and reception of Émile Durkheim, with a focus on demonstrating how the ideal of solidarity emerged as a response to the dualisms created by modern individualism. Van Hulzen's academic interests include exploring the various dimensions of liberal culture and investigating alternatives, such as theories of gift exchange and play, that seek to address its shortcomings. Beyond academia, he works as a book dealer and is actively involved in Amsterdam politics as a member of the Labor Party.
