Naast de in de jaren negentig ontstane linkse identiteitspolitiek, van “vrouwen, mensen van
kleur, lhbtqi+’ers, immigranten, vluchtelingen enzovoorts” (250) zien we vandaag ook identi-
teitsclaims en de ontwikkeling van een eigen vocabulaire ontstaan bij rechts, aldus Van Oenen.
Er zijn daarmee volgens hem in feite drie kampen ontstaan in de culture wars, namelijk het
linkse, het rechtse én het liberale kamp, waarbij de laatste neutraliteit claimt en elke waarde-
keuze ziet als een private aangelegenheid. Van Oenen’s aanname dat de opkomst van linkse
identiteitspolitiek wortelt in de jaren zestig, met hun golf van emancipatoire bewegingen –
zoals de burgerrechtenbeweging, feminisme, verzet tegen de oorlog in Vietnam – lijkt passend.
Maar dan volgt een heel betoog over de opkomst van “Theorie” die de aanjager zou zijn ge-
weest van identiteitspolitieke bewegingen. “Theorie” is hier een noemer voor postmodern de-
constructivisme, die Van Oenen ontleent aan het boek Cynical Theories (2020) van Helen
Pluckrose en James Lindsay. Waar deze auteurs het postmodernisme als pretentieuze onzin
wegzetten, houdt Van Oenen vast aan de bevrijdende werking van dit oorspronkelijk Franse
denken – van Derrida, Lyotard, Foucault – dat ontregelt, gangbare beperkingen van taal en
discipline doorbreekt en laat zien hoe taal en kennis altijd verweven zijn met macht. De “uit-
barsting” van “Theorie”, is volgens Van Oenen een onomkeerbare “gebeurtenis”, met als start-
punt de lezing van Derrida in oktober 1966 aan Johns Hopkins University in de VS. “Theorie”
zou een “krachtige emancipatoire impuls” hebben gegeven, die echter effectief is ingekapseld
vanaf midden jaren zeventig door neoliberale krachten. Maar de hedendaagse culture wars
zouden niet bestaan zonder “Theorie”, aldus Van Oenen (52). “Door het optreden van dit Event
krijgen de culture wars in de jaren zestig en zeventig een radicale en ontregelende wending”
vanuit een heroriëntatie op de constellatie van taal, seksualiteit, waanzin en macht (80).
Op haar beurt heeft “Theorie” weer alles te maken met haar voorloper, het “cultuurmarxisme”,
aldus Van Oenen. Waar de term “cultuurmarxisme” voor rechtse auteurs – zoals Jordan Peter-
son en in Nederland Paul Cliteur – staat voor de doelbewuste strategie van intellectuelen om
de cultuur te infiltreren met gevaarlijke ideeën uit de hoek van hedendaagse identiteitspolitiek,
staat “cultuurmarxisme” voor Van Oenen voor een stroming van het marxisme die sinds de
jaren twintig en dertig cultuur serieus begon te nemen. Maar net als rechts-populisten legt ook
hij een link met de huidige identiteitspolitiek. Door marxisten, zoals Antonio Gramsci werd
